The Long Shift
It wasn’t so long ago that Tom Calvocoressi, Mark Ferraro, Jim Magson and Jim Maher decided to call themselves and their new project The Long Shift. That new name is appropriate for a musical friendship that has very long, deep roots dating back to September 15, 1997. Check out more on this history on the Other Cool Stuff page.
The Long Shift represents a new musical direction as a band. The songs were born and arranged down in our basement studio rehearsal space in Meriden, CT, a building that once housed a meat processing company! After years of recording in do-it-yourself mode, in 2024 the band decided to try an outside studio for recording and booked several sessions at Horizon Studios in West Haven, CT. All of the drum tracks and some bass tracks on the eponymous The Long Shift were recorded at Horizon. The rest of the tracks, including a vocals, were completed and mixed at Lucy, Jim Magson’s North Haven home studio. The Long Shift’s music honors the Americana that has long been a mainstay of our music, but it also takes full advantage of the studio and individual members’ skills to explore new ideas. The Long Shift writes and records original music but plays favorite covers from our influencers and songs from our collective song book.
